In a recent statement, the European Union has publicly distanced itself from comments made by former US President Donald Trump regarding the violence in Nigeria. EU Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Anouar El Anouni, highlighted that attributing the unrest solely to religious factors oversimplifies a multifaceted issue.
Speaking from Brussels, El Anouni acknowledged the statements of the American administration but emphasized that the security crisis in Nigeria stems from a myriad of interconnected causes. “We recognize the many factors behind the violence in Nigeria. While religion is a contributing factor in some instances, it is not the sole cause,” he stated.
El Anouni reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to promoting freedom of religion and belief, aiming to protect all communities, particularly minorities. He reiterated Europe’s dedication to fostering peace and coexistence within Nigeria.
“The EU expresses its solidarity with the communities and families affected by the ongoing violence, including the recent large-scale attacks in both the southern and northeastern regions of the country,” he noted. El Anouni concluded by emphasizing the EU’s commitment to the peaceful coexistence of Nigeria’s diverse population, transcending geographical, ethnic, political, or religious divisions.
Anouar El Anouni, emphasized the European Union’s ongoing collaboration with Nigerian authorities to tackle the root causes of insecurity and deliver assistance to affected communities.
“The European Union works closely with the relevant Nigerian authorities, implementing comprehensive support initiatives aimed at preventing violence, promoting peace consolidation, and aiding victims of violence and forced displacement,” El Anouni explained.
This statement from the EU comes against the backdrop of increasing diplomatic discussions regarding Washington’s stance on Nigeria, as well as heightened concerns over the escalating violence in various regions of the country. The EU’s proactive approach highlights its commitment to fostering stability and supporting Nigeria as it navigates these challenging circumstances.
