US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose a 200% tariff on French wines and champagnes, saying the move would pressure French President Emmanuel Macron to join his proposed Board of Peace
Speaking to reporters, Trump reacts to reports that Macron plans to decline the invitation, dismissing the French leader and claiming tariffs would force a change of mind. “I’ll put a 200% tariff on his wines and champagnes, and he’ll join,” Trump says.
A source close to Macron confirms that France intends, for now, to refuse participation in the initiative.
Trump first unveiled the Board of Peace last September while outlining plans to end the war in Gaza. Invitations sent to world leaders last week describe a broader mandate focused on resolving global conflicts.
A draft charter circulated by the US administration calls on member states to contribute $1 billion to secure membership beyond three years. Diplomats say governments have responded cautiously, warning the initiative could undermine the role of the United Nations.
Trump also says Russian President Vladimir Putin has been invited to join the board.
