United States President Trump announced plans for a federal executive order that would centralize AI regulation, limiting the ability of individual states to impose their own rules.
Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform that the U.S. needs “one rulebook” for AI to maintain its lead in the global race. “We are beating all countries at this point in the race, but that won’t last long if 50 states, many of them bad actors, are involved in rules and the approval process”, he wrote. “AI will be destroyed in its infancy! I will be doing a ONE RULE Executive Order this week”.
The order aims to prevent states from creating their own AI regulations, consolidating oversight at the federal level. The move positions Trump at the center of an ongoing debate over how to govern AI, a technology expected to reshape the economy, national security, and daily life.
Congress has previously resisted legislation that would override state-level AI rules. Many lawmakers, including Democrats and some Republicans, remain wary of AI’s potential risks, from economic disruption to social harms and security threats.
Legal challenges and political pushback are expected, as states and advocacy groups may contest any attempt to restrict their authority over AI development and deployment. Trump’s executive order is likely to intensify the debate over how best to regulate this rapidly evolving technology.
