US President Donald Trump says he will be “indirectly” involved in renewed nuclear talks between the United States and Iran set to begin in Geneva.
Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump says he believes Tehran wants a deal over its nuclear programme, describing the discussions as “very important.” The talks, mediated by Oman, are expected to focus on Iran’s nuclear activities and the possible lifting of US economic sanctions.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi says he is in Geneva to pursue a “fair and equitable deal,” but insists that “submission before threats” is not on the table.
The negotiations come amid heightened tensions and a US military build-up in the Middle East. Satellite imagery verified confirmed the presence of the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier near Iran. Reports also indicate that the USS Gerald R Ford has been deployed to the region, alongside additional destroyers, combat ships and fighter jets.
Trump references last summer’s US bombing of Iranian nuclear sites, carried out by B-2 stealth bombers, saying Tehran understands the consequences of failing to reach an agreement. “I hope they’re going to be more reasonable,” he adds.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio says a diplomatic breakthrough remains possible but warns that reaching a deal will be “very difficult.”
The latest round of diplomacy follows years of strained relations over Iran’s nuclear ambitions, missile programme and regional security concerns.
