Donald Trump has fired back at former counterterrorism chief Joe Kent following his resignation in protest of US military action against Iran, dismissing his stance and questioning his judgement on national security.
In a reaction to Joseph Kent’s decision to step down as Director of the National Counterterrorism Center, Trump criticised the former official, suggesting his exit was justified.
“I always thought he was weak on security. Very weak on security. I didn’t know him well. But I thought he seemed like a pretty nice guy. But when I read his statement, I realized that it’s a good thing he’s out because he said Iran was not a threat.”
Kent had earlier resigned over the administration’s handling of the Iran conflict, arguing that Tehran posed no immediate danger to the United States and warning against what he described as a misguided war.
Trump’s remarks now deepen the public rift between the President and his former top counterterrorism adviser, as tensions grow over the justification and direction of US military involvement in Iran.
