Donald Trump says the United States has carried out major airstrikes on military installations located on Kharg Island, intensifying pressure on Iran and raising fresh concerns over global energy security.
According to Trump, the strikes targeted military facilities on the strategically critical island, while warning that nearby oil infrastructure could become a target if Iran continues actions affecting shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Kharg Island is considered the backbone of Iran’s oil export system, with more than 90 percent of the country’s crude shipments passing through the island’s terminals, making it one of the most sensitive energy locations in the region.
In response, Iranian officials warned that any attack on oil facilities there would trigger severe retaliation, threatening to destroy oil-related assets linked to US interests if strategic energy infrastructure is hit.
Later on Saturday, United States Central Command (CENTCOM) described the operation as a large-scale precision strike, saying US forces had successfully hit more than 90 Iranian military targets.
Iranian state media, including Islamic Republic News Agency, quoted a senior provincial official as saying oil exports from Kharg Island were continuing without interruption despite the military action.
The latest escalation comes as crude oil prices continue to surge globally, having already risen sharply since the conflict expanded, with markets reacting to fears that any prolonged disruption in the Gulf could affect worldwide supply.
Trump had earlier claimed that US strikes had “totally obliterated” military positions on the island, describing the raid as one of the most powerful military operations seen in the region, though no independent evidence has yet confirmed the full scale of the damage.
He also indicated that the United States had deliberately avoided targeting core oil infrastructure for now, signalling that Washington may still be holding back from directly striking facilities that could trigger a deeper global energy shock.
