US President Donald Trump called Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey “a fool” over his support for the country’s largest Somali community.
During a meeting with automotive industry leaders on Wednesday (December 3), Trump also said US Congresswoman Ilhan Omar “shouldn’t be allowed to be a congresswoman,” adding that “she should be thrown the hell out of our country.”
In comments made during a cabinet meeting on Tuesday (December 2), Trump described Somalis as “garbage” and said “we don’t want them in our country,” remarks that Somalis said insulted both their people and their homeland.
Omar on Wednesday denounced US President Donald Trump’s latest remarks about Somalis as “bigoted, xenophobic, Islamophobic,” and said his “obsession” with her and the Somali community was “creepy.”
Omar, who represents Minnesota’s 5th District, noted Trump had previously referred to African nations as “shitholes” and said his rhetoric was not surprising.
Trump’s comments, coming amid broader attacks on migrants from “third-world countries,” sparked condemnation from Somali community leaders and officials in Minnesota, home to the largest Somali diaspora in the United States.
