The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is reportedly conducting a wide-ranging investigation into deaths potentially linked to COVID-19 vaccines, according to a spokesperson for Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who was appointed under former President Donald Trump.
“FDA is doing a thorough investigation, across multiple age groups, of deaths potentially related to COVID vaccines,” said Andrew Nixon, spokesperson for Kennedy’s Department of Health and Human Services, in comments to AFP.
The probe, first reported by Bloomberg and The Washington Post, was initially aimed at examining possible child deaths.
The inquiry has become controversial following the leak of an internal FDA memo in late November, which suggested a link between COVID vaccines and at least 10 infant deaths—claims that were not supported with evidence.
While rare severe side effects from COVID vaccines have been documented, global health authorities maintain that the vaccines remain safe and effective for the vast majority of people.
Nixon declined to provide details on the methods, data sources, or timeline for the completion of the FDA investigation.
The move has drawn criticism from medical experts, who expressed concern over the FDA under Kennedy’s leadership. Kennedy has previously promoted misinformation and conspiracy theories regarding COVID vaccines, including unsubstantiated claims that the virus itself was ethnically “targeted” to harm specific groups.
