Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has reflected on his journey with Nigeria’s senior national team after officially announcing his retirement from international football. The veteran defender confirmed his decision on Thursday, bringing an end to a distinguished ten-year career in the green and white.
Troost-Ekong’s departure stunned many supporters, particularly as it comes barely two weeks before the start of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco. His name had also been included in Eric Chelle’s provisional 52-man squad, adding to the surprise surrounding the timing of his exit.
The former Watford and Udinese centre-back first featured for the Super Eagles in 2015 following his invitation by the late Stephen Keshi. Since making his debut, Troost-Ekong evolved into one of Nigeria’s most reliable defenders and eventually wore the captain’s armband—an honour he said he never imagined attaining when his journey began.
In a farewell video posted on social media, Troost-Ekong expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent Nigeria and looked back on the milestones that defined his international career.
“To have achieved 83 senior caps, played in five major tournaments, three medals, and broken a few records, I really lived my dreams,” he said, reflecting on his accomplishments.
He went on to recount several memorable highlights, including his podium finish at the Rio 2016 Olympics, where he won a bronze medal, participation at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, and appearances in three AFCON tournaments, resulting in both a bronze and a silver medal.
“A bronze medal at the Rio 2016 Olympics, followed by playing at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, and three incredible AFCON tournaments, with a bronze and recently a silver medal, will remain unforgettable,” he added.
Troost-Ekong retires as one of the most influential Super Eagles defenders of the last decade, closing the chapter on a career marked by leadership, resilience, and commitment to Nigeria’s football legacy.
