Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has described tribalism as the greatest obstacle to Nigeria’s advancement, calling it a malignant disease that must be eradicated for the nation to thrive.
In a statement released by Abuja-based consultant Kola Johnson, Atiku accused the political elite of being the chief promoters of tribalism, using it as a tool to divide Nigerians and advance selfish ambitions.
He urged citizens to reject leaders who exploit ethnic sentiments, insisting that competence, integrity, and proven track records not tribe or origin should determine leadership choices.
Citing his personal life as an example, Atiku recalled that if he had placed ethnicity above all else, he would not have married his Yoruba-born wife in the 1970s, whom he fondly described as his “jewel of inestimable value.”
Reflecting on Nigeria’s history, the former presidential candidate said the First Republic stands out as the golden era of politics, largely because of the integrity and achievements of its leaders. Unfortunately, he noted, tribalism gradually eroded that progress and has since remained a stumbling block to the country’s political development.
Atiku therefore called on Nigerians to rise above ethnic divisions, embrace unity, and work collectively to realize the vision of the nation’s founding fathers.
