The tragic death of Nigerian student and e-hailing driver, Isaac David Satlat, in Pretoria West, South Africa has sent shockwaves through the community, as authorities move to bring those responsible to justice.
Three South Africans – a 25-year-old woman and two men aged 26 and 30, have appeared in Pretoria Magistrate’s Court facing charges including murder and car hijacking. All three waived bail and will remain in custody, while a fourth suspect remains at large as police continue their search.
Satlat, who worked as a driver for Bolt, accepted a ride request on February 11 in Pretoria West. Preliminary reports indicate that a dash camera in his vehicle captured the attack. Some footage circulating on social media allegedly shows him being assaulted inside the car. Authorities have urged the public not to share the video, warning it could hinder the investigation and cause additional distress to the victim’s family.
His vehicle was later recovered, and his body was found the same day in Atteridgeville, west of Pretoria. Police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed that the arrests followed detailed investigative work, including review of digital evidence. The female suspect was arrested on February 13, and the two men were detained over the weekend.
The case has reignited concerns over the safety of ride-hailing drivers in South Africa, prompting calls for stronger protections and increased vigilance to prevent similar tragedies.
