The Ogun State Police Command has arraigned Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, the driver of the Lexus SUV involved in a road accident with heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua, on four criminal counts.
Kayode, 46 years old, appeared before a Sagamu Magistrate Court in the Sagamu Local Government Area on Friday, January 2, 2026. The Police confirmed that he was formally charged in connection with the crash.
“I wish to inform the general public that the driver of the Lexus SUV involved in the Anthony Joshua accident case, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, was charged at the Sagamu Magistrate Court today,” the Police stated.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, Kayode faces the following four charges:
Dangerous driving causing death, contrary to Section 5(1) of the Federal Highway Act, Cap F:135, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, as applicable in Ogun State.
Reckless and negligent driving, contrary to Section 6(1) of the same Act.
Driving without due care and attention causing bodily harm and property damage, contrary to Section 7(1).
Driving without a valid National Driver’s Licence, contrary to Section 10(1) of the Federal Highway Act.
The court granted Kayode bail in the sum of ₦5,000,000 with two sureties, but he was remanded in custody pending the fulfillment of his bail conditions.
The tragic accident occurred on Monday, January 29, 2026, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, while Kayode was transporting Joshua and two friends, Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami.
The Lexus SUV collided with a stationary truck, resulting in the immediate deaths of Ayodele and Ghami, while Joshua and the driver sustained minor injuries.
Joshua was discharged from the hospital on Wednesday evening, deemed fit to continue his recovery at home.
Reports indicate that the former world heavyweight champion, accompanied by his mother, visited the funeral home in Lagos to pay respects to Ayodele and Ghami. Their bodies were being prepared for repatriation, scheduled for late Thursday night.
