Celebrity fashion designer Toyin Lawani has called for greater regulation of Nigeria’s healthcare system, following alleged medical negligence at a Lagos private hospital.
Lawani shared her experience on Instagram on Sunday, claiming she suffered complications from a spine surgery at Euracare due to what she described as poor hospital management.
The founder of Tiannah Empire alleged that “most of the doctors there are not even permanent doctors” and accused the hospital of using “international standards to lure clients.”
“Nigeria’s healthcare system needs regulation. Anybody from abroad can have money and open a hospital in Nigeria as a business and do as they wish,” Lawani wrote. She further advised Nigerians who can afford treatment abroad to seek care overseas.
Her statements come in the wake of a similar complaint from renowned author Chimamanda Adichie, who accused Euracare of negligence in relation to her son’s death.
Describing the hospital as more of a business operation than a healthcare facility, Lawani criticized the system for allowing doctors to perform surgeries temporarily without long-term accountability.
“This is about saving lives. We need proper oversight to ensure patients are protected,” she added.
The designer’s post has reignited discussions on healthcare standards in Nigeria, highlighting concerns over private hospital accountability and patient safety.
