Veteran Nollywood actress Toyin Afolayan, popularly known as Lola Idije, has dismissed claims that her on-screen characters reflect her real personality.
The actress, who is often cast as a strict mother-in-law in Yoruba films, explained in a recent interview with fellow actress Ayo Adesanya that her off-screen life is very different.
According to her, she draws strength from her faith in God, which has shaped her modest and disciplined lifestyle. She stressed that she abstains from habits such as smoking and drinking, which some fans assume are part of her real-life persona.
“My acting does not define who I am in real life. I don’t drink or smoke. My strength comes from God, and I try to live modestly,” she said.
Idije credited her late ‘brother’ Adeyemi Afolayan, popularly known as Ade Love and regarded as one of Nollywood’s pioneers, for mentoring her and instilling discipline in her acting journey.
Her career breakthrough came in 1995 when she played Madam Adisa in the hit movie Deadly Affair. Since then, she has remained a household name in Nollywood, known for her commanding performances and memorable expressions.
Beyond her film roles, Lola Idije is also credited with coining viral catchphrases such as “Soro Soke Werey” and “Pele My Dear”, which have since gained popularity on social media and among online movie audiences.
