In a renewed push against banditry and terrorism, Directors of the Department of State Services (DSS) from the North-West states have gathered in Kaduna to review security threats and adopt new intelligence strategies to safeguard the region.
The meeting, which also included representatives from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Niger, and Plateau States, focused on improving intelligence coordination, enhancing inter-agency synergy, and strengthening cross-border security operations.
Kaduna State DSS Director, Hakeem Abiola, said the session aimed to improve collaboration and review field operations, noting that the service, under Director-General Oluwatosin Ajayi, had implemented community-based peace initiatives that helped de-escalate conflicts. He cited partnerships with traditional and religious leaders as key to preventing local crises and reducing insecurity along major highways.
Representing Governor Uba Sani, Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Sule Shuaibu, described intelligence-led cooperation as the backbone of security management, stressing the need for both kinetic and non-kinetic approaches such as community engagement and preventive diplomacy.
The General Officer Commanding 1 Division, Major General Mohammed Wase, represented by Brigadier General Mohammed Kana, said actionable intelligence from the DSS had been critical in degrading terrorist and bandit networks.
Speaking further, the Emir of Zazzau, Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, praised the DSS for strengthening ties with traditional institutions, helping to resolve community disputes and vet local leaders.
The meeting concluded with a renewed pledge to deepen coordination among security agencies, bolster intelligence sharing, and strengthen community trust as part of efforts to restore lasting peace and stability across the North-West region.
