Media personality Toke Makinwa has sparked discussion by asserting that men, not women, are the biggest gold diggers in relationships.
Speaking on her podcast with Tacha, Makinwa criticised societal tendencies to stigmatize women who marry wealthy men, while men engaging in similar practices often escape scrutiny.
“People constantly insult women for knowing what they want. You sit on podcasts as men and claim women are dating for money, but men are the biggest gold diggers. They marry generational wealth and do it without shame,” she said.
Makinwa explained that her comments are not meant to vilify men but to highlight the financial considerations inherent in marriage. She emphasized that both men and women strategically consider financial stability when choosing partners.
“I don’t hate them. If my brother comes to me with two ladies and asks which one to marry, I will advise him to marry the one from a good financial background,” Makinwa added.
Her remarks come amid ongoing conversations in Nigeria about gender double standards, marriage, and societal perceptions of wealth in relationships.
