Media personality, actress, and entrepreneur Toke Makinwa has spoken candidly about her past marriage, revealing how public scrutiny and personal struggles shaped her decision to walk away.
In a sit-down conversation with media host Chude Jideonwo, Makinwa described the pain of living through a relationship that was both highly visible and privately challenging. She explained that while many judged her resilience, few understood the intensity of what she endured.
According to her, society often misunderstands survivors, assuming their experiences were not severe simply because they found the strength to continue with their lives.
“People like to say it must not have been that bad because you didn’t die. But if someone comes back ten times stronger, it unsettles others. Instead of learning from it, they see your strength as a threat. Until you have walked in my shoes, don’t comment on it,” she said.
Makinwa also reflected on how the public nature of her marriage influenced her choice to leave. If the relationship had been private, she admitted she might have stayed longer, but the combination of overwhelming scrutiny and deep emotional turmoil made it unsafe for her well-being.
“Maybe I could have stayed if it wasn’t so public. But the way I loved this person would have been dangerous for me. If I stayed, how I felt would have consumed my entire life,” she added.
The mother of one emphasized that choosing herself was the only way to preserve her life and future. Though the process of leaving was painful, she noted it was a necessary step toward survival and healing.
