Afrobeats singer Tiwa Savage has opened up about her parenting philosophy, highlighting her efforts to instill ambition, discipline, and humility in her 10-year-old son, Jamil.
In an Instagram story, Savage aligned with businesswoman Ibukun Awosika, who recently cautioned against spoiling children, warning that overindulgence can stifle passion and drive.
Savage shared that she intentionally exposes her son to situations that teach humility and responsibility. For example, she allows him to fly economy on commercial flights to appreciate the value of experiences, and he must earn privileges like buying Roblox through good grades or completing chores.
The singer also enforces limits on screen time and sweets, prioritizing Bible study every night as part of his routine.
She wrote:
*”Pastor Awosika: ‘Do not kill your children’s dream by using your success to kill their ambition.’ If children always have everything, they might grow up without passion, drive, or ambition. A dream should be something bigger than your reality, something you wish you had that you don’t already.
“Coincidentally, this is something I have started doing with Jamil. Apart from private flights, when we fly commercial, I have started putting him in economy. Last time he was upset because he couldn’t stretch his legs, but that’s part of learning humility. Now, if he wants Roblox, he must earn it. No iPad, snacks, or candy during the week. Bible study every night before bed. Jamil is a really good kid, but I am intentional about setting a good foundation for him – that’s real love.”*
Savage’s approach underscores a growing conversation about raising children with discipline and responsibility, even amid celebrity lifestyles and access to luxury.
