Afrobeats sensation Tiwa Savage has revealed that she was unimpressed the first time she heard Mavin Records’ chart-topping hit “Dorobucci.”
In an interview with NotJustOk, the “Somebody’s Son” crooner admitted she thought the song sounded “terrible” when Don Jazzy first played it for her during a stay in Dubai for her wedding.
“Don’t know if people know this, but Don Jazzy played ‘Dorobucci’ in the hotel when we were in Dubai for my wedding, and honestly, I thought it was such a crap song,” Tiwa confessed.
Her perception, however, changed completely after she returned to Nigeria and heard the completed version of the track.
“When I got back to Nigeria and went to the studio, I was flabbergasted. I was so angry because this had happened with Eminado too, I didn’t like it initially either,” she said.
Tiwa revealed she was reluctant to record her verse, admitting she was the last Mavin artist to join in, even as her colleagues, including Reekado Banks, Korede Bello, and D’ija, were already excited about the song.
“I was the last person to record my verse because I was looking at everybody like, ‘Do you guys really like this?’” she recalled.
Despite her initial hesitation, “Dorobucci” went on to become one of Mavin Records’ biggest hits, dominating charts across Africa and solidifying the label’s reign in the Afrobeats industry.
Reflecting on the song’s success, Tiwa praised Don Jazzy’s creative genius, acknowledging his unique ability to turn unconventional ideas into timeless records.
“We all know what happened to the record. I don’t know what Don Jazzy does, but he always has a vision. I didn’t even know I’d be on the song, but it turned out phenomenal,” she said with a laugh.
The 2014 hit remains one of the most iconic collaborations in Mavin Records’ history, a testament to Don Jazzy’s artistry and Tiwa Savage’s growth from skepticism to stardom.
