Nigerian music star Tiwa Savage has rejected claims that she intentionally leaked her sex tape in 2021 to boost her career, insisting she was the victim of blackmail.
The singer addressed the controversy in a recent interview with American radio station Hot 97, where she reflected on the backlash that followed the video’s release.
The private tape had surfaced online after Savage refused to bow to a blackmailer’s demands. At the time, the incident drew widespread criticism, with some accusing her of deliberately seeking attention.
Speaking about the experience, Savage said the period was deeply traumatic and made worse by the reactions she received from the public.
“I was bashed for my sex video. A lot of people think I was just trying to get sympathy. Even people with platforms were quite horrible and blamed me,” she said.
The Afrobeats star stressed that she never had any motive to release the footage.
“They said I did it to be relevant. If I were doing that, I would’ve been intentional about it. I would have used better lighting, lingerie, and my facial expressions would have been on point,” she added.
Despite the ordeal, Savage has continued to thrive in her music career, cementing her place as one of Africa’s most influential female artists.
