President Bola Tinubu has directed the Armed Forces of Nigeria to intensify efforts to protect civilians across the country and prevent attacks on military installations in the North-east.
He also tasked the military and other security agencies to work urgently to rescue those kidnapped by terrorists operating in the region.
The directive was contained in a statement issued on Friday by the President’s Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
Tinubu gave the charge while reacting to the recent terrorist attack by Boko Haram insurgents on Ngoshe community in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State.
The President expressed heartfelt condolences to the families of victims affected by the attack, which claimed the lives of innocent civilians and military personnel.
He also sympathised with families of those caught in friendly fire during the aerial interdiction of fleeing terrorists by the Nigerian Air Force.
Tinubu described the incident as a heartless attack on hapless citizens, stressing that acts of terror against civilians would not deter the government’s determination to defeat insurgency.
He urged Nigerians, particularly residents of Borno State and other affected communities, not to succumb to fear.
The President also commended the military for its swift response to the attack, which he said resulted in the killing of several terrorists and forced the remaining fighters to retreat.
Tinubu prayed for the repose of the souls of those who lost their lives during the attack and the subsequent military operation.
He also extended his sympathies to the families of the victims as well as the Government and people of Borno State.
