President Bola Tinubu has dismissed allegations that Nigeria is drifting toward a one-party state, insisting that a vibrant and credible opposition remains indispensable to democratic development.
Speaking on Friday night at the national convention of the All Progressives Congress in Abuja, the president said democracy can only flourish where political competition is healthy and constructive.
His remarks come amid repeated accusations from opposition parties that his administration and the APC are attempting to dominate the political landscape and weaken alternative voices ahead of future elections.
Responding directly to the criticism, Tinubu described such claims as misplaced, maintaining that his administration remains committed to democratic principles, constitutional freedoms, and national cohesion.
“Let us say this clearly and sincerely: we are here for national unity and greatness. We are not going to look back. Critics can say it any way they want,” the president said.
He noted that Nigeria has sustained 26 years of uninterrupted democratic rule, describing it as evidence of the country’s commitment to freedom, democratic continuity, and political progress.
“We thank the Lord for what we have achieved in the last three years — 26 years of unbroken freedom, commitment, and democracy. Let me reiterate, especially to those who often misunderstand us: we do not seek a one-party state.”
Tinubu stressed that a responsible opposition remains critical to governance because it helps question decisions, improve policies, and strengthen institutions.
“Democracy thrives on vibrant and healthy competition. As a statesman and political leader, I believe in a credible opposition — one that can challenge, question, and help refine policies. That is how governance improves, and that is how nations advance.”
He also reaffirmed that freedom of political association is guaranteed under the constitution and must be respected across all political divides.
“We cannot undermine the constitutional freedom of association. A credible opposition is necessary because it helps improve governance and national development.”
Tinubu Promises Improvement in Electricity Supply
The president also assured Nigerians that the persistent electricity challenges currently affecting parts of the country would soon ease, promising better power supply in the coming days.
Nigeria has experienced repeated power disruptions in recent weeks due to reduced generation capacity, but Tinubu said measures are already underway to stabilize supply.
“To many Nigerians concerned about electricity, we are paying close attention to that issue. Electricity will improve, and with it will come greater opportunities for industrial growth.”
According to him, the government plans to strengthen the national grid through major infrastructure investment.
“Through the Grid Asset Management Company, we will inject approximately 1,500 megawatts into a new grid corridor.”
Tinubu added that the impact of ongoing reforms is already becoming visible across sectors.
“The results of our programmes are visible, tangible, impactful, and measurable — not mere rhetoric as some opposition voices suggest. We are moving from survival mode to stability.”
The president said his administration remains focused on delivering practical results that will improve economic productivity, industrialisation, and citizens’ welfare.
