Nigeria’s armed forces remain a top priority for the federal government, President Bola Tinubu has said, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to their welfare, professionalism, and operational effectiveness.
The president spoke through the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, on Tuesday in Abuja at the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day Gala and Award Night.
Tinubu said honouring fallen heroes was a lasting national obligation rather than a ceremonial routine. He commended the armed forces and other security agencies for recent operational successes, noting improved security in communities previously affected by fear and violence.
He attributed the gains to sustained pressure on terrorist and criminal networks and stronger collaboration with regional and international partners, which he said had helped restore public confidence.
The president also acknowledged the sacrifices of military families, thanking spouses, children, and relatives of service personnel for their resilience and support.
As part of activities marking the 26th Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day, Tinubu announced two public engagement initiatives: the Thank-A-Soldier Electronic Wall, a digital platform for citizens to share appreciation messages with troops and veterans, and the My Nigerian Hero Campaign, a year-long social media initiative honouring serving and retired personnel.
Reiterating that security remains his administration’s foremost concern, Tinubu pledged continued investment in equipment, training, and improved living conditions, while urging the armed forces to remain disciplined, united, and loyal to the constitution.
Earlier, the Minister of Defence, retired General Christopher Musa, described the sacrifices of military personnel as the foundation of Nigeria’s freedom and sovereignty, noting that the awards presented at the gala symbolised acts of courage and dedication, many carried out away from public attention.
Awards were presented to outstanding serving and retired officers, including the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu; former Army Chief, retired Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai; and former Army spokesperson, retired Brig. Gen. Sani Usman.
