President Bola Tinubu has mourned the passing of Imam Abdullahi Abubakar, the Chief Imam of Nghar village in Plateau State, who died at the age of 92.
The late cleric gained widespread recognition in 2018 after sheltering more than 200 Christians during communal clashes in Plateau State, an act that earned him both national and international acclaim.
In a statement on Friday, President Tinubu, through his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, described Imam Abdullahi as a remarkable religious leader whose life reflected faith, courage, and a deep respect for human life.
“At a time when tribal and religious tensions threatened to divide communities, Imam Abdullahi stood unwaveringly for peace, compassion, and humanity”, the President said.
He added, “Despite the grave risks to his own safety, he chose to protect the vulnerable, prioritising unity over division and love over hatred. His actions convey a powerful lesson on the essence of true faith and the kind of humanity we should all aspire to”.
President Tinubu further noted that Imam Abdullahi’s bravery and selflessness had been recognised both locally and internationally, highlighting his commitment to coexistence among diverse communities.
