Vice-President Kashim Shettima has disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered an immediate reinforcement of security operations in Borno State following a deadly terrorist attack in Maiduguri.
The attack occurred around 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday when suspected terrorists detonated an explosive device at Al-Adum Mosque in the Gamboru Market area of Maiduguri. The blast claimed the lives of five worshippers and left several others injured during evening prayers.
In a statement shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Thursday, Shettima strongly condemned the attack, describing it as “a despicable assault on innocent citizens and the peace of the nation.”
According to the Vice-President, the Federal Government has deployed additional tactical security teams to Maiduguri with clear instructions to track down and apprehend those responsible.
“President Bola Tinubu has ordered an immediate intensification of security operations in Borno State following the incident,” Shettima said. “The Federal Government is working closely with the Borno State Government and relevant security agencies to protect vulnerable communities and secure critical infrastructure across the North East and other regions of the country.”
He stressed that the government would not tolerate any attempt to destabilise the nation or undermine its peace and security.
“Our security agencies are working round the clock to ensure that the perpetrators of this heinous crime are swiftly identified and brought to justice,” he said, expressing confidence that the existing security framework would not only apprehend the attackers but also uncover the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
Shettima extended the Federal Government’s condolences to the Borno State Government, residents of Maiduguri, and families who lost loved ones in the attack.
“We stand in solidarity with the people of Borno at this painful moment. The Federal Government is confident that those responsible for this cowardly act of terrorism will face the full weight of the law,” he assured.
Reaffirming the administration’s commitment to national security, the Vice-President said the Tinubu-led government remains resolute in its constitutional duty to protect lives and property.
“Since President Bola Tinubu assumed office in 2023, this administration has consistently reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the security, unity, and stability of our nation,” Shettima said. “That commitment remains steadfast under God and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
He added that the Federal Government would continue to provide security agencies with the resources, support, and coordination required to decisively defeat terrorism in all its forms.
