Nigeria has unveiled renewed plans to accelerate the development of its space sector, with President Bola Tinubu ordering the implementation of key aspects of the country’s revised long-term space roadmap.
The President directed the immediate release of approved funds to support the maintenance of national space assets and called for the updated 25-year space development plan to be forwarded for consideration by the Federal Executive Council.
Represented at the first meeting of the National Space Council in Abuja by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu said the country must actively participate in the global space economy and ensure that its space programme delivers tangible benefits to citizens.
He stressed that investments in space technology would strengthen sectors such as agriculture, security, communications, disaster management and digital infrastructure, adding that the programme must be guided by accountability and measurable outcomes.
Tinubu also instructed relevant agencies to enforce existing space regulations and spectrum management frameworks, urging full compliance from government institutions and private sector operators. He further directed that all approved funds required for implementation be released promptly.
According to the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, the Council approved reforms to improve working conditions within the space agency, alongside the creation of a technical working group to review the revised 25-year roadmap.
The Council also endorsed further development of a national space centre project aimed at enhancing satellite operations and strengthening local capacity within the sector.
