President Bola Tinubu has reportedly stepped in to mediate the growing political tension in Rivers State involving Governor Siminalayi Fubara and former Governor Nyesom Wike.
The intervention comes as the Rivers State House of Assembly pursues impeachment proceedings against Fubara and his deputy, citing allegations of gross misconduct. The notice of impeachment, endorsed by 26 lawmakers, claims that the governor’s actions violated provisions of the Nigerian Constitution.
Speaking in an interview, TVC’s Director of News, Kolade-Otitoju, explained that the President’s involvement seeks to preserve a delicate political balance ahead of the 2027 presidential elections. He noted that while Fubara enjoys strong grassroots support, Wike remains a highly influential political figure whose engagement can sway loyalties across the state.
“President Tinubu appears intent on managing this standoff carefully to avoid deepening divisions within the party. “If the situation is mishandled, he could emerge as the biggest political loser in this scenario, Kolade-Otitoju said.
Kolade-Otitoju added that tensions have been fueled by previous public exchanges of harsh words between Fubara and Wike, raising the stakes for party cohesion in Rivers State. He further noted that Governor Fubara has remained silent publicly since the impeachment notice was served, with negotiations continuing behind the scenes to address the political sensitivities linked to Wike’s influence.
