President Bola Tinubu has directed a sweeping withdrawal of police officers from VIP protection duties, ordering their redeployment to strengthen frontline policing across Nigerian communities.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President announced the decision after a high-level security meeting at the State House with service chiefs and heads of security agencies.
Under the new directive, VIPs who require armed escorts will now be serviced by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), allowing the police to refocus on core law-enforcement duties, especially in underserved and rural areas where manpower shortages have weakened security.
The Presidency said the move is part of a broader reform aimed at improving public safety, noting that the President has also approved the recruitment of 30,000 additional police personnel and is working with state governments to upgrade training facilities nationwide.
The redeployment, according to the statement, is expected to significantly boost police visibility and response capacity as the government intensifies efforts to tackle rising security threats across the country.
