Nigerian singer Timaya has caused controversy after stating that it is better to have children out of wedlock than to marry, claiming that marriage often “doesn’t work.”
The comments were captured in a viral video where Timaya and fellow singer Paul Okoye, also known as Rudeboy, appeared to be giving marital advice to Phyno.
“Just born pikin, pikin go grow. This marriage thing no dey work,” Timaya said in pidgin English, prompting mixed reactions from those present.
The clip quickly circulated on social media, generating debate as users expressed differing opinions on his perspective about marriage and parenting.
Timaya is a father of four children with three different women. He shares daughters Emmanuella and Gracey with Barbara Fumnaya Nwaokolo, a son, Emmanuel, with Tamar, and his youngest child, Maya, with Dunnie Onasanya.
In a 2024 interview with Naija FM, Timaya revealed that he remains unmarried in his 40s because he has never felt drawn to marriage, though he admitted that his stance could change in the future.
The singer’s recent remarks have reignited conversations about marriage, family structure, and societal expectations among Nigerian celebrities and fans alike.
