Three police officers sustained injuries on Friday after a reckless motorist violently rammed into a police checkpoint in Edo State.
The incident was confirmed in a statement issued on Saturday by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Edo State Command, ASP Eno Ikoedem.
According to the statement, the incident occurred at the Iyekogba Estate Gate in Benin City when a driver, later identified as a 19-year-old male, drove against traffic and forcefully breached a police checkpoint barricade.
The suspect reportedly made a sudden turn and drove directly toward officers on lawful duty, knocking down three personnel in the process.
The reckless act did not end there, as the driver went on to crash into multiple vehicles before he was eventually subdued and arrested by the police. The injured officers were immediately rushed for medical care and are currently receiving treatment.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is an unlicensed driver. The vehicle involved—a black Mercedes-Benz GLK SUV valued at approximately ₦28 million—was found to be unregistered, despite being in use since May 2024.
Police also recovered suspicious items from the suspect, including a substance believed to be Canadian Loud and a Sprite bottle containing a sky-blue liquid suspected to be diluted refnol.
The Command recalled that on December 24, 2025, it had issued a public advisory urging motorists to slow down at checkpoints and cooperate with police officers during lawful checks in the interest of public safety.
Reiterating this directive, the Command warned that there is “absolutely no justifiable reason for any motorist to speed through a police checkpoint, except with the intention to evade lawful checks or endanger the lives of officers on duty.”
The Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, CP Monday Agbonika, strongly condemned the attack and stressed that anyone who deliberately assaults or attempts to harm police officers on lawful duty will face the full weight of the law. Declaring that “enough is enough,” he emphasized zero tolerance for such acts.
The Edo State Police Command reassured the public of its unwavering commitment to maintaining law and order and safeguarding lives and property across the state.
