A tragic gas explosion on Friday night claimed the lives of three persons in the Biodun Alaadun area of Ona Ara Local Government, Ibadan, Oyo State.
Though early unverified reports suggested a higher death toll, officials of the Oyo State Fire Service, led by General Manager Mr. Akinyinka Akinyemi, who arrived among the first responders, confirmed that three fatalities were recorded.
According to eyewitness accounts, the explosion occurred while a gas tanker was discharging liquefied gas into a retail outlet. The victims reportedly included the owner of the gas shop and individuals nearby during the discharge.
The General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Yemi Akinyinka, clarified the casualty figures.
“Contrary to claims that several people died, three lives were lost — the shop owner and those dispensing the gas,” he said.
He added that fire service operatives were swiftly deployed to the scene to contain the blaze and prevent further escalation.
Akinyinka confirmed that normalcy has since been restored to the area and that the remains of the victims have been evacuated.
