Three key suspects in the killing of five forest guards at Old Oyo National Park in Oloka Village on January 5 have been arrested and are undergoing further investigation, the Special Adviser to the Oyo State Governor on Security, Fatai Owoseni, confirmed on Friday.
Owoseni made the disclosure while briefing Governor Seyi Makinde during an on-the-spot assessment visit to the site of the attack in Oriire Local Government Area of Ogbomoso.
During the visit, Gov. Makinde announced a N5 million compensation for each family of the deceased guards and scholarships up to university level for their children. He also assured residents that a joint security programme would be established to protect the community and said he would request the establishment of a military base in Oloka from military authorities in Abuja to further enhance local security.
The governor emphasised that security is a collective responsibility and urged residents to report any suspicious activities to government and security agencies. He praised the service commanders for their dedication to safeguarding lives and property in the state.
Makinde also pledged to rehabilitate the road linking Ikoyi-Ile to Oloka under the Rural Access and Agricultural Market Project (RAAMP), improve telecommunication services by installing masts, and provide boreholes and solar-powered streetlights to enhance living conditions and safety.
Addressing the community, he said, “For the families who lost loved ones, each will receive N5 million, and scholarships will be provided for their children up to university level. We are taking every necessary step to support our security personnel and prevent such tragedies in the future”.
A minute of silence was observed in honour of the deceased.
