A Nigerian psychological thriller is gaining international attention as The Weekend begins streaming on Max in several Central and Eastern European countries.
The film, produced by Trino Motion Pictures, is now available in 15 countries across the region, including Poland, Hungary, Romania, Serbia and Croatia. The acquisition marks the first time the platform has picked up an independently produced Nigerian thriller for the region.
Storyline and Cast
The Weekend follows the story of Nikiya, played by Uzoamaka Power, an orphan who travels to meet the family of her fiancé Luke, portrayed by Bucci Franklin.
What begins as a tense family introduction gradually spirals into a disturbing experience as hidden secrets and unsettling traditions begin to emerge.
The film also features performances from Meg Otanwa, Keppy Ekpenyong-Bassey and Gloria Anozie-Young.
Festival Success and Global Recognition
Directed by Daniel Oriahi and produced by Uche Okocha, the film has received strong recognition on the international festival circuit.
It premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2024, becoming the first independently produced Nigerian movie to be selected for the event.
The thriller later screened at the BFI London Film Festival and Screamfest Horror Film Festival in the United States, one of the longest-running festivals dedicated to horror cinema.
At the Monsters Fantastic Film Festival, the film received the Best Film “Monster Award”.
Major Awards in Africa
Back in Nigeria, The Weekend also performed strongly at the Africa Movie Academy Awards, where it received a record 16 nominations.
The film ultimately won several major honours, including Best Film, Best Nigerian Film, Best Screenplay and Best Cinematography.
Producer Uche Okocha said the global streaming release demonstrates the growing demand for Nigerian storytelling.
“Nigerian stories belong on the world’s biggest stages,” he said.
Countries Where the Film Is Streaming
The film is now available on Max in Albania, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Kosovo, Slovenia, Montenegro, Bosnia-Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Moldova and Serbia.
The release represents another step in Nollywood’s expanding global footprint as international platforms continue to invest in African content.
