Global pop icon Taylor Swift has shut down rumours suggesting she was jealous of her longtime friend Selena Gomez for getting married before her.
Swift addressed the speculation during her recent appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, clarifying that her wedding speech at Gomez’s September ceremony had been misinterpreted.
Selena Gomez tied the knot with producer Benny Blanco in late September, with Swift among the star-studded guests. Following the event, reports circulated that the “Cruel Summer” singer joked about Gomez “beating her to the altar.”
However, Swift dismissed the claims, saying her remarks were lighthearted and focused on their early friendship rather than her own relationship.
“I did do some light teasing about the way we dressed in 2008, the year we met,” she explained. “It was the year of deep V-necks and colourful skinny jeans. I talked about how happy I am for her and how beautiful it’s been to be part of her life, but I did not make it about me.”
She also made it clear that she deliberately avoided mentioning her engagement to NFL star Travis Kelce, adding, “I made a point to not mention anything about my engagement during the speech.”
In the same interview, Swift revealed why her close friend Ed Sheeran wasn’t among the first to hear the engagement news. According to her, the British musician doesn’t own a phone and can only be reached via email or FaceTime.
Swift’s candid remarks put to rest the swirling gossip, reaffirming her support for Gomez’s new chapter and celebrating their enduring friendship.
