The Taraba State Government has ordered the temporary shutdown of its state-owned Specialist Hospital to allow for ongoing renovation and construction works aimed at upgrading the facility.
The directive, issued by the Taraba State Ministry of Health and dated January 8, cited environmental and safety concerns arising from the construction activities as the reason for the suspension of hospital operations.
According to a letter addressed to the hospital’s Chief Medical Director, the decision was taken with the approval of Governor Agbu Kefas, who directed that all activities within the facility be halted to enable contractors to carry out their work without obstruction and within an accelerated timeline.
The Ministry instructed the hospital’s management to ensure full compliance with the directive by effecting a complete shutdown of services pending the completion of the renovation exercise.
The order was signed by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Bordiya Buma, who emphasized the need for immediate compliance in the interest of public safety and the efficient execution of the project.
“Following the ongoing overhaul of the facility and the environmental hazards associated with such construction works, His Excellency, Governor Agbu Kefas, has directed that all activities within the hospital be suspended to allow contractors to work unhindered and complete the project speedily,” the letter stated.
“In view of this development, you are hereby instructed to temporarily close the hospital pending the conclusion of the renovation works.”
While the government did not announce a specific date for the reopening of the hospital, it assured residents that services would resume once the renovation exercise is completed.
The Taraba State Specialist Hospital is the state’s foremost referral healthcare facility, providing critical medical services to patients across Taraba State and neighbouring states.
