The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has stressed that effectively addressing security challenges in Plateau State is critical to Nigeria’s overall peace and national stability.
Shaibu made the remarks during an operational visit to the Headquarters of 3 Division of the Nigerian Army in Jos, where he addressed officers and soldiers deployed across the state.
He charged the troops to remain disciplined, committed and professional, stressing that discipline remains the bedrock of military professionalism and operational success.
The Army Chief reminded personnel that service in the Nigerian Army is voluntary and anchored on the noble duty of defending the nation’s territorial integrity and protecting citizens.
In a statement by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Apollonia Anele, it was disclosed that the COAS received a detailed briefing from the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 3 Division, on operational realities and welfare concerns facing troops in the area.
According to the statement, several of the key issues raised during the briefing have already been addressed, while others are receiving prompt attention.
Lieutenant General Shaibu assured troops that Army Headquarters is providing the necessary combat enablers to ensure they are adequately equipped to perform their duties effectively.
“The welfare of our personnel is paramount. We will continue to create the enabling environment required for you to carry out your responsibilities efficiently,” he said.
He urged younger soldiers to respect the chain of command and seek mentorship from their superiors, noting that officers and senior non-commissioned officers are critical to professional development and cohesion within the ranks.
The COAS also emphasised the importance of sustained physical fitness and mental alertness, adding that deliberate measures are in place to prepare troops for the demands of ongoing operations.
On the Plateau security situation, he acknowledged its peculiar nature and assured personnel that Operation Enduring Peace is being properly guided and supported to achieve lasting stability.
As part of the visit, Lieutenant General Shaibu commissioned two blocks of 30 flats for non-commissioned officers and a separate residential accommodation block for officers at Maxwell Khobe Cantonment in Jos.
