Popular comedienne and skitmaker Taaooma has drawn attention to the persistent problem of illegal waste disposal in Lagos State, describing the situation as alarming and in need of urgent intervention.
In a video shared on social media, Taaooma showed large piles of refuse dumped along the road median in the Ikotun, Ejigbo, and Egbeda axis of Lagos. The footage captured residents moving about their daily routines despite the visible accumulation of waste.
Concerned by the development, the content creator tagged relevant state agencies, including the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), as well as the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab. She called on the authorities to urgently address the issue.
“What’s happening in the Ikotun/Ejigbo/Egbeda axis like this?” she wrote, urging the agencies to investigate and take action.
The post quickly gained traction online, prompting reactions from social media users who claimed the problem extends far beyond the areas highlighted in the video. Several commenters described similar conditions in other parts of Lagos, particularly across the mainland.
One user noted that neighbourhoods such as Shomolu, Mushin, Ketu, Oshodi, Surulere, and Yaba are also affected, describing the situation as widespread. Another commenter argued that the practice has become normalized, alleging that the routine removal of illegally dumped waste without penalties has encouraged continued violations.
Others expressed deeper concern about the environmental and health implications. A user described Lagos as dirtier than it has been in years, while another claimed a neighbour temporarily relocated due to the stench, growing piles of refuse, and fears of a possible disease outbreak.
Taaooma’s post has since reignited conversations around waste management, enforcement, and environmental responsibility in Lagos, with many calling for stricter measures and long-term solutions to curb illegal dumping across the state.
