Leeds United defender Isaac Schmidt has officially committed his international future to Switzerland, ruling out any chance of representing the Super Eagles.
The Switzerland Football Association confirmed the development after Schmidt made his competitive debut for the national team in their 3-0 victory over Slovenia in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at St. Jakob Stadium on Monday.
The 25-year-old, born in Lausanne to a Swiss-German father and Nigerian mother, was previously eligible to represent Nigeria or Germany. However, his second-half introduction in place of Silvan Widmer cemented his allegiance to Switzerland.
By doing so, Schmidt follows the path of players like Manuel Akanji and Noah Okafor, both of whom also had the option of playing for Nigeria before becoming tied to Switzerland through competitive appearances.
Currently on loan at Werder Bremen from Leeds United, Schmidt now looks set to continue his international career with the Red Crosses as they pursue qualification for the 2026 World Cup.
