Jacques Moretti, co-owner of the Swiss bar that was engulfed in flames during New Year celebrations, has been taken into custody following questioning by prosecutors, a source told AFP on Friday.
Moretti and his wife, Jessica, jointly own Le Constellation, the bar at the centre of last week’s deadly blaze in the upscale ski resort of Crans-Montana. Both were interviewed by prosecutors in Switzerland’s southwestern canton of Valais (Wallis) as part of the ongoing investigation into the tragedy.
The development came as Switzerland observed a national day of mourning for the victims of the inferno, which claimed the lives of 40 people.
Authorities said the average age of those who died was just 19, underscoring the scale of the loss among young people.
Investigators are continuing to probe the circumstances surrounding the fire, which erupted during New Year festivities and has since shocked the nation.
