The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has called upon the Super Eagles to exercise restraint and maintain total concentration as they enter the critical knockout stages of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. National President Isaiah Benjamin issued this counsel on Wednesday through a formal statement released by the Association’s Secretary General, Ambassador Ikenna Okonkwo. Benjamin emphasized that the three-time champions must avoid any conduct that could jeopardize their pursuit of the continental trophy, particularly as the level of competition intensifies.
The association’s leadership specifically addressed the importance of emotional intelligence and professional conduct during high-stakes matches. Benjamin highlighted that success at this level requires more than just physical talent; it demands a stable and unified locker room.
“There is no need to be confrontational with teammates, opponents or match officials. At this stage, mental resilience and psychological balance are crucial to achieving the team’s set goal,” he said.
Addressing recent reports concerning an on-field disagreement between Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman during the victory over Mozambique, the SWAN President appealed to all stakeholders to remain steadfast in their support. He urged the sports media to prioritize reporting that uplifts the national image, reminding journalists that the team’s progress reflects the collective pride of the country.
“As the Super Eagles win and progress, it is a triumph for all Nigerians and for the country as a whole,” he said.
Looking ahead to the quarter-final matchup, Benjamin warned the players that the tournament will become significantly more difficult from this point forward. He challenged the technical crew to refine their strategies and ensure the players remain psychologically prepared for more aggressive opponents.
“The competition will certainly take a different shape from the quarter-final stage. To emerge champions, you must be well prepared to defeat any side, no matter how strong. The Super Eagles have abundant talent, but the technical crew and officials must put heads together and approach the upcoming games with the right mindset”, he said.
The President expressed his unwavering faith in the squad’s potential to secure the title in Morocco. He noted that Nigeria’s dominant style of play has transformed the Super Eagles into a major attraction for global football fans during this edition of the tournament.
“The Super Eagles are now the attraction of all football fans from all over Africa and globally here in Morocco. While watching the Round of 16 match against Mozambique on Monday night, fans from other countries were hailing and cheering Nigeria louder because of the purposeful football displayed on the pitch,” Benjamin said.
SWAN concluded the statement by commending the team’s unbeaten streak, which began in December, and reiterated that discipline on the pitch remains the final piece of the puzzle for a successful campaign.
