The Ogun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has defended the indefinite suspension of former governor and Ogun East senator, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, insisting that due process was followed.
APC Publicity Secretary, Olufemi Nuberu, said on Thursday that Daniel was suspended for alleged anti-party activities during the August Remo Federal Constituency by-election. He added that the appeal window had closed.
“The party’s decision stands. The window to appeal has lapsed. If the Daniel wailers want to wail, that’s their right,” he said.
Nuberu was reacting to a Tuesday press briefing by APC leaders from Ogun East at Daniel’s Asoludero residence, where they described the suspension as baseless and politically motivated. The chieftains, including Gen. Olumuyiwa Okunowo (rtd.), Dr. Niyi Osoba, Otunba Korede Okusanya, and others, alleged that Governor Dapo Abiodun was trying to edge Daniel out of the 2027 senatorial race.
They questioned why Daniel received no official suspension letter and noted inconsistencies in the party’s claim that he belongs to Ward 4 instead of Isote Ward 12, Sagamu where he is registered.
Daniel’s media aide, Steve Oliyide, accused Abiodun’s camp of targeting the senator ahead of 2027, dismissing claims of anti-party behaviour. He said Daniel campaigned and funded APC efforts during the by-election despite being sidelined.
Oliyide also alleged hostility from the governor since Daniel declared interest in the 2022 senatorial race, and raised concerns about alleged “ritual oath-taking” among some party executives. He urged President Bola Tinubu and APC national leaders to intervene.
But Nuberu dismissed the press briefing as “a sham,” insisting the individuals were Daniel’s foundation coordinators, not APC leaders. He said Daniel had repeatedly flouted party rules and could not be above the APC that sponsored his 2023 senatorial victory.
