The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has unveiled a humanitarian assistance initiative worth US$500,993 in Senegal, aimed at providing vital support to refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), stateless individuals, and asylum seekers.
This initiative underscores ECOWAS’s commitment to promoting human dignity, fostering regional solidarity, and advancing inclusive development.
The launch event brought together senior government officials, including the Chief of Staff to the President of Senegal and the Chairman of the National Committee for the Management of the Situation of Repatriated Refugees and Displaced Persons (CNRRPD).
Also in attendance were representatives from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), displaced communities from Casamance, Mauritanian refugees residing in the Senegal River Valley, and development partners, along with the ECOWAS Commissioner for Human Development and Social Affairs, Prof. Fatou Sow Sarr, who led the ECOWAS officials.
The initiative will be implemented by the Government of Senegal through the CNRRPD with support from UNHCR.
It aims to provide life-saving assistance, support sustainable livelihoods, alleviate pressure on host communities, promote peaceful coexistence, and bolster national capacities for inclusive and enduring solutions for the affected populations.
