Nigeria kicked off their 2025 Africa Cup of Nation campaign with a thrilling 2-1 victory against Tanzania in their Group C opener at Fez Stadium on Tuesday night.
Nigeria dominated possession for much of the first half, creating several promising moves through the wings. Samuel Chukwueze was a constant threat, repeatedly troubling Tanzania’s defence with direct runs and incisive passes.
The breakthrough finally came in the 36th minute when Semi Ajayi powered home a towering header from an Alex Iwobi delivery, giving the Super Eagles a deserved lead heading into the break
Tanzania responded with renewed vigour after the interval, and their persistence paid off early in the second half when Charles M’Mombwa clinically converted a goal to level the score, igniting hopes among the underdog supporters.
But Nigeria restored their advantage as Ademola Lookman produced a superb solo effort, twisting through defenders and firing past the goalkeeper to restore the lead in the 53rd minute.
That goal proved decisive, securing all three points for the Super Eagles and enhancing their early momentum in a challenging group that also features Tunisia and Uganda.
The result provides a positive start for Nigeria as they look to bounce back from the disappointment of missing out on the 2026 FIFA World Cup and focus on continental success.
Nigeria will now carry confidence into their next group matches as they aim to progress deep into the tournament.
