The Super Eagles’ faint hopes of sneaking into the 2026 World Cup play-offs suffered a major setback on Monday after Cameroon were held to a 0-0 draw by Angola in Yaoundé.
Despite failing to win at home, the Indomitable Lions remain tied on 15 points with Burkina Faso and Niger, keeping them in contention to finish among the top four best runners-up across the nine qualification groups.
The result, however, has left the door slightly open for DR Congo, Uganda, or even Nigeria to overtake them in the rankings — though Cameroon’s superior +12 goal difference gives them an edge in the tight race.
For Nigeria, who currently sit third in Group C with 14 points and a +3 goal difference, the task is clear: they must defeat Benin Republic in Uyo on Tuesday to have any chance of progressing.
Meanwhile, Gabon and Burkina Faso are now almost certain to secure two of the coveted play-off spots, leaving the remaining teams in a tense battle for the final positions.
