South African champions, Mamelodi Sundowns, have advanced to the CAF Champions League group stage after completing a 7–1 aggregate rout of Nigeria’s Remo Stars, following a 2–0 win in the return leg on Sunday at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
Having established a dominant 4–1 first-leg advantage in Abeokuta with goals from Tashreeq Matthews, Peter Shalulile, Miguel Reisinho, Arthur Sales, and Tsiki Ntsabeleng, the Sundowns finished the job in emphatic fashion on home soil.
The hosts took control early in the game, with Khuliso Mudau forcing a strong save in the seventh minute after firing from a tight angle. The breakthrough eventually arrived in the 21st minute, when Nuno Santos pounced on a pass from Aubrey Modiba, who had pressed high to win possession before setting up the opener.
Sundowns extended their lead just before halftime — Peter Shalulile reacting quickest to a Modiba corner to steer home the second goal and put the game beyond the Nigerian side.
Remo Stars struggled to contain the South African giants’ high-intensity play but managed a few half-chances after the restart. However, Rhulani Mokwena’s men remained in full control to seal a comfortable passage into the group stage, reaffirming their dominance on the continent.
