Former Super Eagles coach, Sunday Oliseh, has endorsed Wilfred Ndidi as the player best suited to lead Nigeria’s national team, citing the midfielder’s leadership qualities and respect among teammates.
Speaking on the Oliseh Insight Podcast, Oliseh praised the Besiktas midfielder for his consistent performances and influence on the pitch. “At the moment, I think nobody doubts the respect the players have for Ndidi. And he’s a player that plays every game,” Oliseh said. “I am not trying to push for who is going to be captain, but I think Ndidi is already the captain anyways because he captained the last game.”
The former national coach, who once controversially chose Ahmed Musa over John Mikel Obi as captain, emphasized that leadership in the Super Eagles goes beyond wearing the armband. He stated that the appointed captain must exhibit true leadership qualities and not simply act on instructions from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
Ndidi’s potential captaincy comes ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where Nigeria has been drawn in Group C alongside Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania. Oliseh’s comments underline the importance of strong leadership as the Super Eagles aim to build on their past performances in the continental tournament.
