No fewer than 32 inmates who have been serving various jail terms in custodial centres in Nasarawa State have regained their freedom, amid governor Sule birthday.
Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule while granting them pardon on Saturday during a visit to the Lafia Custodial Centre as part of activities marking his 66th birthday, tasked the beneficiaries to live responsible lives.
He, however, warned them to conduct themselves in ways that would enable their smooth reintegration into society.
According to him, the exercise was carried out in fulfilment of his constitutional responsibility, following recommendations by the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.
The governor, then appreciated members of the council for discharging their duties with diligence, integrity and thoroughness.
Sule further urged the inmates to desist from acts capable of returning them to custody, stressing the need to justify the mercy extended to them.
Earlier, Mr. Isaac Danladi, State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, applauded the governor for the benevolence gesture, describing it as a step toward strengthening the justice system in the state.
Barrister Danladi narrated the action was taken in line with the powers conferred on the governor under Sections 212 (1) and (2) of the 1999 Constitution.
The state Attorney General and Commissioner of justice explained that the pardon was granted after due consultation with the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.
His words, “This action underscores the governor’s strong belief in rehabilitation, restorative justice and the provision of second chances for deserving citizens to mend their ways.”
