Hundreds of students of Ntenungi Secondary School have been left in distress after a fire gutted one of the school’s dormitories on Tuesday night, destroying property and leaving many without personal belongings.
The school is located in Rwamwanja Refugee Settlement in Kamwenge district, western Uganda. According to the head teacher, Burnet Nuwagaba, the fire broke out at around 8:00 pm while students were attending evening prep in classrooms.
The blaze started in the boys’ dormitory block known as London City. Nuwagaba said students noticed flames emerging from the dormitory and alerted teachers. Together, they attempted to put out the fire using water, but their efforts were unsuccessful.
Several items, including beds, mattresses, bedding, clothes, metallic suitcases and books, were destroyed in the blaze. The fire also caused extensive damage to the roof of the dormitory block.
However, Nuwagaba said no student was injured because all learners were in class for evening revision when the fire broke out. He added that the cause of the fire has not yet been established, but police have launched investigations into the incident.
