U.S. President, Donald Trump, has issued a fresh warning to Iran, saying the military has prepared detailed war plans that could lead to the destruction of key infrastructure within hours if a proposed peace deadline is not met.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Trump said the plan involves striking major bridges and power plants across Iran in a coordinated operation lasting about four hours.
He claimed the objective would be total destruction of critical infrastructure if the United States decides to act.
“We have a plan, because of the power of our military, where every bridge in Iran will be decimated by 12 o’clock tomorrow night, where every power plant in Iran will be out of business, burning, exploding and never to be used again.
“I mean complete demolition by 12 o’clock (midnight), and it’ll happen over a period of four hours, if we wanted to”, Trump said.
The comments come amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy route through which a significant share of the world’s oil and gas is transported.
Trump had earlier set a deadline of 8:00 pm Washington time on Tuesday (midnight GMT) for Iran to agree to reopen the Strait to international shipping, warning of consequences if the demand is not met.
The Strait of Hormuz has remained a major flashpoint in recent weeks, with disruptions to shipping already contributing to volatility in global energy markets and raising concerns among oil-importing countries.
Iran has yet to formally respond to the latest remarks, but officials in Tehran have previously warned that any attack on its territory would trigger strong retaliation, further escalating fears of a wider regional conflict involving multiple countries.
