Kithuka Kimunyi, a 55-year-old man accused of killing a GSU officer manning State House using an arrow, has been arraigned at the Kibera Law Courts under a miscellaneous application.
After limping into the courtroom, he was informed that he would be detained at Kilimani Police Station for 14 days to allow detectives to complete investigations.
The suspect will also be taken to Mbagathi Hospital to seek medical attention for his injuries.
In court, he was identified as a resident of Makueni County. He allegedly travelled from Makueni to Nairobi on Sunday night before carrying out the attack on Monday morning.
The incident occurred around 8:10am near State House Gate D along Dennis Pritt Road. Police said the assailant, armed with a bow and arrows, confronted officers stationed at the gate and ignored repeated orders to surrender.
He reportedly fired an arrow that struck Police Constable Ramadhan Matanka in the ribs.
Despite being rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital, the officer succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment. His body was later moved to the hospital mortuary pending a post-mortem.
In a statement, National Police Service (NPS) spokesperson Muchiri Njaga condemned the attack, describing it as a “heinous act” and praised the officers at the scene for their quick response, which helped prevent further casualties.
